The 25th Amendment being considered to remove President Trump from office

Washington, January 11, 2021

Plans are underway by House Democrats with the objective of removing Donald Trump from office this week. Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker, has already outlined the route the Democrat’s need to follow to the impeachment vote. Vice President Mike Pence has been urged to activate the 25th amendment.

Steny Hoyer, majority leader, will request a unanimous consent, which requires Pence to initiate the 25th amendment. This will be as per the guidelines of the Raskin Resolution.

The consent looks almost certain and after this, the stage is all set for the Democrats to vote on this issue on Tuesday.

Pelosi mentioned that Pence had been asked to reply within a 24-hour deadline. If however any action from Pence is taken before the expiry of the deadline, articles of impeachment against Trump will be introduced by the House Democrats.

In a written communication by Pelosi, it was mentioned that the urgency was in view of the threat to the constitution and the democracy of the country, which was posed by Trump. She also mentioned that she was in favor of the 25th amendment as compared to impeachment. The 25th amendment suited them better in terms of urgency.  Impeachment is a long process as compared to the amendment.  In the 25th amendment measure if the Vice President and a majority of the cabinet members are unanimous in declaring the President as unfit for office. He has to go immediately and the Vice President then takes over as the acting President.

She also mentioned that Congress was supporting the impeachment measure rather strongly.
