Robert Francis Prevost, 69, has been elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This historic moment marks the first time an American has become pope, though he is equally known for his deep missionary work in Latin America, particularly in Peru.

A Journey from Chicago to the Vatican

Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian heritage, Pope Leo XIV was raised in a devout Catholic household. After being ordained in 1982, he moved to Peru in 1985 where he served as a parish priest and seminary teacher in Trujillo. His time in Peru established his reputation as a compassionate leader who worked with marginalized communities.

Though he frequently returned to the U.S. for pastoral duties, Pope Leo XIV maintained strong ties with Latin America, eventually earning Peruvian citizenship. His dual identity helped him become a bridge-builder between North and South American Catholic communities.

From Bishop to Pope

In 2014, he was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru. His leadership in Latin America earned him a key role as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing bishop appointments across the continent. His rising influence in the Church led to his appointment as archbishop in early 2023, followed by elevation to cardinal within months. These roles set the stage for his election as Pope Leo XIV.

When he appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, crowds greeted him with chants of “Viva il Papa!” In his first public remarks, Pope Leo XIV paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, and urged the faithful to advance together in unity and faith.

“We still hear in our ears the weak but always courageous voice of Pope Francis who blessed us. United and hand in hand with God, let us advance together,” said Pope Leo XIV.

Views and Vision

Early signs suggest that Pope Leo XIV shares many of Pope Francis’ views on key issues such as immigration, environmental protection, and social justice. He has urged the Church to move “from words to action” in addressing climate change and has overseen practical initiatives like installing solar panels and using electric vehicles at the Vatican.

Though his stance on LGBT issues is still being evaluated, Pope Leo XIV has expressed support for allowing blessings for same-sex couples, while emphasizing that bishops must consider cultural contexts in applying such directives.

He is also a strong advocate for women’s participation in Church leadership. Pope Leo XIV supports their inclusion in the Dicastery for Bishops, calling their perspectives a vital “enrichment” in the selection process of episcopal leaders.

Symbolism in His Name

By choosing the name Leo, Pope Leo XIV signals a desire to uphold a legacy of moral courage and social engagement. The original Pope Leo I famously persuaded Attila the Hun to spare Rome, while Pope Leo XIII is celebrated for defending workers’ rights during the Industrial Revolution.

Experts suggest that Pope Leo XIV is embracing the legacy of social transformation, justice, and compassion – values that are increasingly relevant in today’s global crises.

Looking Ahead

As Pope Leo XIV begins his pontificate, the world watches with anticipation. His deep connection to both North and South America, his history of outreach to marginalized communities, and his progressive stance on many social issues suggest a leader who aims to unify, reform, and uplift the global Church.

Pope Leo XIV enters this role during a time of great spiritual and social challenges, and many Catholics around the world hope that his leadership will inspire a new era of compassion, reform, and unity in the Church.
