The novel Coronavirus outbreak after taking a toll on business worldwide has not even spared the Bollywood film industry, Angrezi Medium which has Irrfan Khan slated in a comeback role after a period of hibernation in the film industry and boasts of a stellar star cast as well, opened amidst the closure of theatres and cinema halls.
Angrezi Medium is an emotional story with powerful performances by a strong star cast including Radhika Madan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepak Dobriyal, Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj Tripathi. This film was expected to gross atleast 4.50 crore as an opening but could as per a report released by trade analyst Taran Adarsh on its opening day – Friday – make only Rs 4.03 crores. This was still considered as a decent figure in the wake of the recent epidemic and the theatre closures nationwide.
The movie’s release was negatively impacted in Delhi as theatres remained closed. It was not only in the National Capital but in other places including cinema halls in Jammu and Kerala which also remained shut. This Irrfan Khan starrer is cited to be the 9th highest opening film of the year.
The highest opener of this year was according to trade analyst reports was :
Baaghi 3 at – 17.50 crores.
Radhika Madan was “speechless” when Amitabh Bachchan sent her a hand written congratulatory letter and flowers to her on her performance in this Homi Adajania film.
Amitabh Bachchan praised her for her stunning performance.
In her Instagram post she shared his handwritten letter with a picture of the flowers and wrote :
“ I dont know what to say or write..I’m speechless and so so so overwhelmed! @amitabhbachchan sir its an honor to receive this . I always used to imagine my door bell ringing after my film’s release and a person standing outside saying “Amitabh Bacchan sir ne aapke liye phool aur ek note bheja hai” and me fainting right after that. Thankfully I didn’t faint when I actually received it..I just stood there for a few seconds soaking it all in, teary eyed,in gratitude. Thank you for making my dream come true Sir . It has motivated me to work even harder and entertain my audience with even more honest performances.”
Radhika’s role in the film is that of Irrfan Khan’s daughter .
This release is the sequel of the hit film Hindi Medium released in 2017,which starred Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar in lead roles .
Angrezi Medium is Irrfan Khan’s first release after he came back to India following his cancer treatment and recovery thereafter.
Director Homi Adajania has posted that the film will be re-released in India once the country’s general situation following the COVID -19 Outbreak improves and theatres re open.
On his Instagram story he posted : “At midnight all theatres will close across India till the authorities give us further notice. We will re-release Angrezi Medium when it is safe to do so. Till then stay safe and be kind to each other.”
Producer Dinesh Vijan said that this film had already received a lot of love from Dubai and other International territories but unfortunately could not be released in many parts of India due to the theatre closures.
The film has received very good reviews so far from the viewers and the critics who have seen it so far.
