Health Canada offers information and advice on who shouldn’t get the Moderna vaccine

Safety guidelines regarding the administration of Moderna vaccine which is the second vaccine that has been approved by Canada have been issued .

Dr.Supriya Sharma, who is a senior health advisor at Health Canada, while addressing a press conference revealed the safety guidelines associated with the Moderna Vaccine. She said that she would urge people to follow the same advice that is given along with the Pfizer vaccine.

The approval of the Moderna vaccine by Canada is not the end of the government’s responsibility. They also go on to give instructions to the general public and make it very clear as to who should and who should not get vaccinated.

The same advice is being issued for both vaccines, Moderna and Pfizer that if you have an allergy to any of the components you should stay away from getting vaccinated. Information on the medical and non-medical components in the vaccine were made public. The Government of Canada mentioned that mRNA was the only medical ingredient.

The list of non-medical ingredients included:

  • polyethylene glycol (PEG) 2000 DMG
  • sodium acetate
  • acetic acid
  • cholesterol
  • 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC)
  • lipid SM-102
  • sucrose
  • water for injection
  • tromethamine
  • tromethamine hydrochloride

It was made very clear that any allergic reactions to any vaccines in the past must be clearly mentioned and medical consultation and advice taken while considering the vaccination.  Dr. Sharma also mentioned that any food allergies should also be informed to the respective medical practitioner. Any medicine reactions should also be informed. Dr. Sharma informed that clinical trials took care to exclude people who had reported serious allergies in the past to vaccines. It is a commonly known and accepted fact that there is an element of risk attached to all vaccines.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had earlier mentioned that by January 31st Canada expects to receive nearly 1.2 million doses from Pfizer and Moderna.
