Major upheaval in Congress – just before the Rajya Sabha polls, 4 Gujarat Congress MLAs resign

On March 26, the election to 4 Rajya Sabha seats were to be held in Gujarat , but in a recent development 4 r Congress MLAs in Gujarat have resigned and handed over their resignation to  assembly speaker Rajendra Trivedi . This move has necessitated the opposition party to shift at least 24 MLAs to Jaipur on Sunday.

The Congress however, has stated that they have not lost any “honest “ MLAs. The state BJP President Jitu Vaghani has mentioned that if the 4 MLAs have quit then there is no doubt that the BJP will win 3 seats in the Rajya Sabha elections. He also mentioned that the Congress could contemplate withdrawing  its candidates from the Rajya Sabha election till Monday.

The Congress in a move to prevent losing any more of its MLAs to the saffron party through poaching has shifted 24 of then to Jaipur.

It was announced and confirmed on Sunday by the Assembly speaker Rajendra Trivedi that 4 Congress MLAs had indeed resigned and their resignations had been accepted. He went on to add that these names would be disclosed during the Monday session of the Assembly.

Kunvarji Bavaliya BJP Minister in the State Government, mentioned that “After the announcement of the Rajya Sabha election, several Congress MLAs who have been in touch with us say they are not happy (with their party). Even the MLAs whom the Congress high command could not contact (for shifting them outside Gujarat) are also preparing to join the BJP,” 

With this resignation of these four MLAs, the strength of the Congress party which was 73 in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly has dropped down  to 69.The BJP candidates are  Abhay Bhardwaj, Ramila Bara and Narhari Amin for the Rajya Sabha  election.

Senior  leaders Shaktisinh Gohil and Bharatsinh Solanki will be contesting from the Congress.

The current ratio is 103 MLAs in the House from BJP. 2 MLAs from  Bharatiya Tribal Party , with 1 MLA of the Nationalist Congress Party and 1 from the  Independent.
