Let us have a look at some of the myths & also understand what research tells us about it.

  • Achieved the desired body, don’t want to exercise anymore – consistency is everything. If you don’t sustain the regular exercise regime, it can again lead to weight gain & loss of endurance. Maintaining a healthy exercise regime is essential for a lifetime.
  • Exercises should be longer in duration – any physical activity throughout the day, which can make you feel breathless like climbing stairs, carrying shopping bags, etc. can also be beneficial. You don’t have to do longer hours of workout to achieve your desired goal.
  • Older people cannot exercise – evidence shows that muscle mass, power, strength can be increased at an advanced age & ageing is not a cause of severe problems until the person is in the mid-nineties. In fact, muscle strengthening, balance training & aerobics can be included in the exercises even when you are 65 years or older.
  • Pregnant women cannot exercise much – moderate physical activities must be, in fact, done during pregnancy as it reduces the risk of weight gain & even gestational diabetes. Also, moderate physical activities are safe & healthy for pregnant women & have no threat to the wellbeing of the foetus.
  • Feeling unwell so cannot exercise – if a person is ill, he/she can reduce the amount of workouts if the person feels pain or exhaustion of any kind. But, being physically active is completely safe even when a person is unwell.
  • Weight loss can only come from exercising – this is not true. Exercising plus the right diet in correct quantities will help a body lose weight. Both of these factors are vital in achieving the goal & keeping the body healthy.
