We hear so many cases of theft or lost mobile phones every day; some lose their mobile devices while travelling or they even forget at a restaurant or a public bathroom & in many other cases most of the times, while travelling in trains & other public transports, many people’s mobile devices get stolen.

Well, in order to give some relief to such people living in Delhi-NCR whose phones get stolen or lost anywhere, the government has come up with a new web portal (https://ceir.gov.in/Home/index.jsp) that could help trace the mobile devices & also block the phones so that it doesn’t get misused by anybody. The project has been supported by the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) system & the work for the project has been started by the telecom department for looking into matters of theft, security & many similar concerns which also includes reprogramming of mobile devices.

This project was launched last year in September at Mumbai for phone users in Delhi-NCR where the government’s web portal can help them if in case they lose their phones or it gets stolen. The portal is going to facilitate requests of Delhi-NCR users for blocking the lost or stolen phones; it will also block the phone across various mobile networks, it will give access of services to other existing customers with phones having the same international Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, it will help in unblocking recovered mobile handsets & it will also share the tracing data with police authorities.

5 crores of mobile subscribers from Delhi & other adjoining areas are said to benefit from this initiative. This software is developed in a way that it can block an individual mobile handset even after being on a cloned IMEI number.

To use this web portal, all the subscribers in Delhi-NCR whose phone gets stolen or lost can log into the web portal & register their complaint with their ID proof & will also have to upload the police complaint. According to the information given, the stolen or lost phone will get blocked. And, in case someone tries to use the phone then it can also get traced based on the tower signals for police to recover the mobile.

Talking about the progress of the same initiative in Mumbai, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that around 500-600 complaints were already logged in. In Mumbai, in 50% of the cases traceability information gets handed over to the police. He also added that if someone doesn’t use the phone after stealing it, then it cannot be traced however, it still can be blocked & the person stealing it won’t be able to sell it.
