People who are habituated to take naps in the afternoon for more than 90 minutes have an increased risk of stroke by 25% than people who take naps of only 1 to 30 minutes.

Also, people who don’t take naps at all or those who take naps lasting half-hour to one hour are not likely to get a stroke than the ones that take a nap from 1 to 30 minutes.

Author Xiaomin Zhang of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China revealed that taking long naps & more sleep suggests an overall inactive lifestyle that increases the risk of stroke.

He also mentioned that more research is needed to know why taking long naps & sleeping more than 9 hours can result in getting a stroke. Also, initial investigations have shown that sleeping excessive or taking longer naps can result in unfavourable changes in cholesterol levels & also increases the weight circumferences, which are other crucial factors in increasing the stroke rate.

The research was carried out on 31,750 people with an average age of 62 in China. Around 6 years, the study was conducted to investigate the sleep patterns of the people of that age group. And, during that time, around 1,557 stroke cases were notified. People were questioned about their napping & sleeping patterns.

And, the study revealed that 85% of the people who were long nappers & sleepers were more prone to getting a stroke than the ones who had moderate napping & sleeping habits.

Based on the above study, Zhang also mentioned the importance of sleeping & napping in moderation, especially for middle-aged & oldies & why it is vital to have a good quality sleep.
